Cute little 30s tune - a perfect Fats Waller vehicle: catchy melody with humorous lyrics that have a sad irony to them. Fats Waller, one of the greatest piano player performers, was a teacher of and idolized by Count Basie, among others. He often got stuck singing silly tunes meant to amuse white people - who were blown away with his technique anyway. He was only 40 when he died, the result of hard living and constantly being on the road.
I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter
And make believe it came from you
I'm gonna write words oh so sweet
They're gonna knock me off my feet
A lotta kisses on the bottom
I'll be glad I got 'em
I'm gonna smile and say, "I hope you're feeling better"
And close "with love" the way you used to do
I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter
And make believe it came from you
