My Funny Valentine (1937)

Rodgers/Hart

How poignant is it that Lorenz Hart, one of the century's most romantic lyricists,  never found true love in his own life? Hart led a troubled, alcoholic life - self conscious about his looks (he was extremely short with exaggerated, dwarflike feature) insecure, habitually late ... everything that his musical partner Richard Rogers was not. Still, their collaborations are among the most lovely music written, and Hart's lyrics, while witty and fun, often come with a pang of sadness.

VERSE

Behold the way our fine-feathered friend
His virtue doth parade.
Thou knowest not, my dim-witted friend
The picture thou hast made.

Thy vacant brow and thy tousled hair
Conceal thy good intent.
Thou noble, upright, truthful sincere,
And slightly dopey gent - your're --

CHORUS

My funny Valentine
Sweet comic Valentine
You make me smile with my heart
Your looks are laughable
Unphotographable
Yet you're my favourite work of art

Is your figure less than Greek
Is your mouth a little weak
When you open it to speak
Are you smart?

But don't change a hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little Valentine stay
Each day is Valentine's day

Is your figure less than Greek
Is your mouth a little weak
When you open it to speak
Are you smart?

But don't you change one hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little Valentine stay
Each day is Valentine's day
