What a Little Moonlight Can Do (1935)

Harry M. Woods

A dear but distant friend Tim Lucas published this comic book cover image on his Facebook page today, setting in motion a chain of interesting comments about Jimmy Olsen, Superman, and animal kisses. (I didn't realize that Jimmy's stories often featured the 'hairy palms' syndrome, for example.) It's one of the great Billie Holiday standards, and I would love to know what the verse is to this song.

CHORUS

Ooh, ooh, ooh
What a little moonlight can do
Ooh, ooh, ooh
What a little moonlight can do to you
You’re in love
Your heart's fluttering all day long
You only stutter cause you for sure
Just throw the words out of the way
I love you

Ooh, ooh, ooh
What a little moonlight can do
Wait a while
Till a little moonbeam comes peepin' through
He'll get bored
You can't resist him
All you'll say
When you have kissed him is
Ooh, ooh, ooh
What a little moonlight can do
Ooh, ooh, ooh

I can't help reading those lyrics without hearing the "Ooo ooo" part as a wolf howling at the moon!

Francine,
You are absolutely right. The Chorus of the song was riveted into immortality by Billie just months after it was written and, I must admit, it is a stunning chorus. But where is the verse? The only way to find it would be the original sheet music. So where is that? In some antique store somewhere? Not likely. Maybe the Library of Congress catalog. Wish me luck.
