Mr. Sandman (1954)

P. Ballard

"Please turn on your magic beam
Mister Sandman, bring me a dream"

As a chronic insomniac, I fully appreciate the idea of a Mister Sandman tiptoeing into my bedroom to wave a magic wand so I can embrace my dreams. This is not what the singer of our song is asking, however. If anything, the requested dream is going to slip into bed beside the songstress and -well, anyway.
I love the version of Mr. Sandman by the Chordettes, even if they do find Liberace sexy. I do not know the source of the additional lyrics.

LYRICS

Mister Sandman, bring me a dream
Make him the cutest boy that I've ever seen
Give him two lips like roses in clover
Then tell me that my lonesome nights are over

Mister Sandman, I'm so alone
Don't have a boyfriend to call my own
Please turn on your magic beam
Mister Sandman, bring us a dream

Mister Sandman, bring me a dream
Please make him gargle, and brush with Gleem
Give him a lonely heart like Pagliacci,
With lots of wavy hair like Liberace!

Mister Sandman, bring me a "he"
Give him a basket... of flowers for me
Please turn on your magic beam

Mister Sandman, bring us please please bring us
Mister Sandman, bring us a dream (a dream)
A dream (a dream)

EXTRA LYRICS

Mister Sandman, (Yes) I need a man
No one psychotic or Republican (I'll do what I can)
Give him two legs, like Greg Lougainis
And make him public about his gayness!
Mister Sandman (Sandman), won't you believe
We want a Superman like Christopher Reeve

Some one who will make us scream (Ahhhh!)
Mister Sandman, bring us Please please bring us
Mister Sandman, bring us a dream (a dream)
Mister Sandman, bring us a.... A dream
