"It will remind you of old fashioned lace,
a glass of wine will greet your smiling face."
As we approach the third anniversary of Katrina, I can't help thinking of the great old city of New Orleans, its devastation and neglect by everyone since, and how it has been such a mecca and haven for musicians. While many know the song, "Do You Know What It Means to Miss New Oreleans?", fewer are aware of the wonderful tune by Hoagy Carmichael, simply titled with the city's name. Louis Armstrong played both, of course.
LYRICS
If you’ve never seen a quaint old southern city
just think of New Orleans
If you’ve never seen that town, boy, it's a pity
There’s nothin’ like New Orleans
It will remind you of old fashioned lace
a glass of wine will greet your smiling face
If you’ve ever seen a black-eyed girl like mine
Then you’re right in it, in New Orleans
